Market Leader: Upper Intermediate Final Progress Lesson

Task 1: Catching up and exchanging news

T: Eriko? Eriko Fukui? Hi! How have you been?
S: Excuse me, have we met?
T: It’s me, Lisa Schneeble! We met at the orthodontics conference 3 years ago.
S: Lisa! That’s right! It’s good to see you again, how have you been?
T: Oh, I’ve been great. Our clinic is expanding you know. We’ve had more and more patients, orthodontic treatment is really catching on these past few years.
S: Oh yeah, same with my clinic. We are seeing even an increase in adult patients. People are worrying about their looks more. That’s good for our business.
T: That’s true. Oh, are you here for the whole 3 days of the conference?
S: Yes! I’m really looking forward to Professor Helmut’s talk on the new types of glue and enamel protectors.
T: Oh, me too. I’m going to try to catch him for a talk afterwards.
S: Good luck with that! He’s in very high demand.
T: Yes, I know. Are you going to do some sightseeing while you’re here?
S: Oh, of course. I got a recommendation for a really nice restaurant not too far from the conference center, would you like to try it out together?
T: That sounds good. I’ll catch you after this panel!
S: Oh right, we should probably go inside.

Note: The student at this level should sound natural and have a rather high level of vocabulary, and not need so much prompting to carry on the conversation, even when they have to make up some information to keep the talk going.

Task 2: Phone call

T: Kirsten speaking.
S: Hi Kirsten, I got your number from a former colleague of yours, Max Bolt. My name is Koichi Kimura, and I work for Executives Placement Inc.
T: I see…
S: I’m calling because of a new position that is opening up, at XX company. It’s a Widget Manager position. Would you like to hear more about it?
T: Well, I’m pretty happy in my current position, but do give me some more details.
S: Well, you would be responsible for managing the Widget department, which is a huge new expansion for XX company. You would be supervising 50 people.
T: It sounds like quite the responsibility. What is the compensation?
S: We of course, offer a very competitive, and rather generous compensation package, including some very attractive benefits. In the coming year, company XX is planning to expand aggressively into the Widget market with some innovations, and hopefully become the market leader in that sector.
T: Those sounds like very ambitious plans.
S: Yes, and we think you could be the right person for the job. Would you like to meet up to hear more about it?
T: Yes, I would.
S: Are you free tomorrow around lunchtime? We could meet at the Panda Bear Cafe on 3rd street?
T: Hrm, it would be a bit far. How about the Italian restaurant on 5th, La Bella?
S: That sounds good. La Bella, at 1pm?
T: Yes.
S: See you then!

Task 3: Negotiation

S: Hey, are you free right now?
T: Yeah, I have 5 minutes. What’s up?
S: I need a favour. My niece’s wedding is next weekend, and I really need to attend, but as you know, I work on the weekends.
T: I see…
S: Would you be able to swap shifts with me so I can attend? I would be really grateful.
T: Hrm, I suppose… but weekends are rather important to me, I need them to spend time with my family.
S: It would only be just this one time. If you want, I could write the meeting minutes for the marketing meeting for you in exchange, I know you’re not keen on that.
T: OK, if you write the summary as well.
S: Deal! Thank you, this really helps me a lot.
T: No problem.
