Communicative lesson goal

By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to talk about experiences in their life.

Communication strategies:
The student should be able to talk about experiences in their life using the following strategy:
1) state the experience
2) give some information about the experience
e.g.
A) Have you ever been met a celebrity?
B) Yeah. I have met two celebrities. Last year, when flying home from New York, I got upgraded to first class and I the person sitting next to me was Tom Cruise.

Words and rules:
- The student should be able to conjugate the present perfect tense. e.g. subject + have + past participle
- The student should be able to use the present perfect tense to talk about experiences e.g. I have been to Rome.

Appropriateness:
Non-verbal behaviour: NA
Register: When talking to a friend about experiences in your life a casual register is usually used.
Social rules: NA
Cultural references: "Never have I ever" is a popular drinking game. In this game people state an experience, and if you have had the same experience you need to take a drink. Also, a "bucket list" is a list of things you would like to do before you die AKA "kick the bucket".

I’ve traveled overseas twice. I’ve been to Italy and Japan. The food in Italy was delicious. In Japan, the people were very polite.

I’ve swum with dolphins in Hawaii. It was great! The dolphins were friendly. We played together in the water for two hours.

Option 1:

Purpose: Steering the student into the goal of the lesson before opening the book.
Method: Before you open the book, take turns listing the top three experiences in your life.
e.g. when my daughter was born / winning a national tournament / meeting my favorite celebrity

Option 2:

Type: Let's practice - Controlled conjugation practice
Purpose: To teach the student how to conjugate past participles
Method: Say a present sentence and have the student transform it into a present perfect sentence.
e.g.
A) I eat pizza
B) I have eaten pizza

Option 3:

Type: Let's practice - Controlled conjugation practice
Purpose: To teach the student how to conjugate the present perfect tense with contractions.
Method: Give the student a sentence using present perfect and they need to change it into a contraction.
e.g.
A) He has been to China.
B) He's been to China

B) Well, I’ve had so many. Some of the best ones are: camping in the Amazon, seeing the Grand Canyon, and going trekking in Nepal.
A) Wow! That’s so cool. How long were you in the Amazon for?
B) Three weeks.
A) How did you travel?
B) We trekked through the jungle with a local guide.
A) That’s really cool.
B) I’d like to go on a new adventure soon, but I don’t have any ideas. Do you have any suggestions?
A) Have you ever climbed Mt. Everest?
B) No, but I’ve always wanted to.
A) It’s not cheap, but I think you would love it.
