This lesson presents a problem that the student needs to solve. Read the situation, then use the content from the three sections (Reading, Listening, and Interview) to complete the final task.
By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to select a travel destination taking into account information from different sources.
Communication strategies:
The student should be able to decide on a travel destination using the strategy below:
1) state the problem that needs to be solved
2) discuss the pros and cons of each destination
3) decide on a destination
4) make a travel plan for the week
5) offer to help you partner with some stuff
9) go over your plans.
e.g.
A) OK, so we need to select the destination. Where would you like to go?
B) China. How about you?
A) Italy.
B) Well, you love Chinese food. If we go to China, You can eat lots of amazing Chinese food.
A) That’s true. But I also really like Italian food. And if we go to Italy we can have real pizza.
B) Good point. China is cheaper though, if we go there we can do more shopping.
A) I’m more interested in Italian brands, though.
B) OK. What do you want to do most in Italy?
A) I really like Italian history, so I’d love to see Pompeii, the Colosseum and Saint Mark's Basilica.
B) China has amazing history as well.
A) That's true, but I can speak Italian and neither of us can speak Chinese, so it will be easier to get around in Italy.
B) That’s a good point. OK. Let’s go to Italy.
A) Great. Let's make a plan. The trip is for a week, right?
B) Yeah.
A) OK, So
on the first day, let's check into the hotel and just check out the town, because we will be pretty jet lagged.
B) Sure. Would you like me to find a nice restaurant near the hotel?
A) Yeah. That would be great.
[Discusses other plans e.g. arrival and departure time / and what to do on different days]
A) OK, so we are going to Italy. We are leaving on the 18th. On the first day, we are planning to go check into the hotel then.... [explains future plans)
B) That's right.

to allow you to get the most out of your vacation. In Hawaii, you will be able to enjoy free surfing lessons. In China, you will be able to climb the Great Wall. And in Italy, you will be able to go on a personal
tour of some of the most historic places in Europe, including the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Option 1:

Purpose: To steer the student into the lesson
Method: Before you start the lesson, discuss a trip you have taken with a friend.
Option 2:

Type: Reading - Vocabulary search
Purpose: To introduce vocabulary / check comprehension
Method: After the student has read the reading activity and completed the questions, have them find the following words in the reading by listening to their definitions. The teacher reads the definition and the student needs to find the correct word. After the student has found all the words, ask the student to give you a summary of the reading. Hopefully, the student will use some of the new words in their summary.

3) a prize (n) - something that is won in a contest or given as an award
4) all-expenses-paid (adj) - an expression that means that you do not have to pay for anything yourself
5) airfare (n) - the money a person pays to travel on an airplane

7) amazing (adj) - causing great surprise or wonder
8) to claim something (v) - to say that (something) belongs to you or that you deserve (something)
9) by (prep) - not later than (a specified time)
10) for (prep) - used to indicate the person or thing that something is sent or given to
Option 3:

Purpose: To increase fluency and confidence
Method: After you have completed the task role-play one time. Give the student some feedback and
then do it again. Time permitting, you are welcome to do this multiple times.
Option 4:

Type: Task - Role-play
Purpose: To add complexity to the role-play
Method: Change the role-play a little bit, so that both partners need to plan a trip then present it to each other. The partners can then discuss which trip sounds more fun. (This can be good review for lesson 24 - Explaining future plans)
Option 5:
Difficulty ★★
Type: Task - Role-play
Purpose: To add complexity to the role-play
Method: Add an extra step to the role-play. The student needs to call the travel company and claim their prize. They then book the holiday with the operator.
Reading
1) What did you win?
An all-expenses paid trip to either Hawaii, China, or Italy
2) Do you need to pay for the airfares?
No, you don’t.
3) What should you do if you want to know more?
You should call them.
4) What is the deadline for claiming the prize?
The deadline is May 8th.
Listening
You want to find out more about the three destinations so you call the company. Listen to the travel agent and make some notes for each destination.
1) In Hawaii, you will be able to enjoy free surfing lessons.
2) In China, you will be able to climb the Great Wall.
3) In Italy, you will be able to go on a personal tour of some of the most historic places in Europe, including the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Interview
A) So where would you like to go for the vacation?
B) All the destinations sound really good.
A) Yeah, but we can only pick one.
B) Well, I guess I’ll choose China.
A) Why?
B) Well, I’ve always wanted to go to China since I was a kid.
A) What would you do on the trip?
B) Well, I’d definitely eat a lot of Chinese food, but I’d also like to see lots of historical sites. I’d climb the great wall. I’d also like to see the Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City. Oh and the Terracotta Army too. As you know, I also really like photography, so I’d love to take some photos of the amazing landscapes there. So it would be great to see the Yulong River and Jiuzhaigou National park.
