Communicative lesson goal

By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to make small talk with someone about what they usually do in their free time.

Communication strategies:
The student should be able to able to make small talk with someone by following the 4 steps below:
1) greet your partner
2) ask about what they do in their free time
3) show interest
4) share information

A) Hey Thom. What do you do for fun?
B) I like watching movies.
A) Cool! Me too. What’s a good movie you’ve seen recently?
B) The Hateful 8.
A) Oh yeah. I heard about it. It looks good. I want to see it.
B) You should. It’s really good.
A) I sometimes go to the movies after work. What do you usually do after work?
B) I usually go straight home, but sometimes I meet up with my colleagues and have a drink after work.
A) Yeah me too. It’s important to relax. Where do you usually go?
B) There is a nice English bar just down the road. We usually go there.
A) Cool.
B) Do you know any good bars?
A) Yeah. There is a great bar on the other side of the station. Would you like to go sometime?
B) Sure. Sounds fun.

Words and rules:
- The student should be able to name some basic pastimes / hobbies / activities. e.g. gardening / shopping
- The student should be able to make suggestions. e.g. I know a great restaurant that you might like.
- The student should be able to ask about habits e.g. What do you usually do after work?
- The student should be able to ask about past actions e.g. What did you do yesterday?

Appropriateness:
Non-verbal behaviour: The student should know how to show interest during a conversation.
Register: When talking with a friend we usually use a casual register.

Method: Before you open the book, talk to the student about what you do after work or on the weekends. Try to come up with some vocabulary.

Purpose: Teaching the student how to give suggestions
Method: Introduce and practice some expressions you can use to give suggestions.
- If you want to go somewhere fun, why don't you go to Disney land?
- I know a good place if you are interested.
- One of my favorite places is... Would you like their number?
