By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to describe a medical problem.
Communication strategies:
The student should be able to able to describe medical problems by following the 2 steps below:
1) state the problem
2) state how you got the injury / illness
e.g.
(injury) My hand really hurts. I bruised it while I was playing soccer yesterday.
(illness) I have a sore throat and I've coughing all day today. I think I have a cold. A few people at my office are sick so that might be the reason.
Words and rules:
- The student should be able to name various body parts. e.g. head / hand / leg etc.
- The student should be able to describe injuries. e.g. I cut my hand.
- The student should be able to describe illnesses and symptoms. e.g. I have a headache.
- The student should be able to construct the passive voice e.g. He was hit by a car.
Appropriateness:
Non-verbal behaviour: The student should be able to gesture that they are in pain.
Register: When talking to a doctor we usually use a more polite register.

I’m afraid I’m not feeling very well, doctor. I feel sick. I have a sore
throat and a cough. My head aches and I have a fever of 40
degrees. My muscles feel sore, too.

stop sneezing. My eyes have become red and sore. If I walk through
the park, I feel even worse!

I had a little accident yesterday. I fell off my bicycle last night as I
was riding home from work. My left arm really hurts and I can’t move
it. I got this big bruise on my leg, too!

Purpose:
Allowing the student to practice describing different injuries.
Method: Play a game where one person needs to gesture an illness or injury and the other partner needs to guess it.
e.g. (holding hand)
A) Did you bruise your back?
B) No.
A) Did you cut your hand?
B) Yes.
Option 2:

Let's practice - Uncontrolled practice
Purpose:
Allowing the student to practice describing different injuries.
Method: Do a short skit where one person plays the role of the doctor and the other plays the role of the patient. The doctor asks what's wrong, and the patient needs to describe their injury / illness.
e.g.
A) What's wrong?
B) I fell off my skateboard and I think I broke my hand.

- When did the symptoms first start?
- How did you do manage to do that?
- What symptoms have you been having?
- Do you have a runny nose?

B) He's at home. He said his hay fever is acting up.
A) OK. It looks like it's just the two of us then.
