This lesson presents a problem that the student needs to solve. Read the situation, then use the content from the three sections (Reading, Listening, and Interview) to complete the final task.
By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to present a new medicine.
Communication strategies:
The student should be able to present the medicine using the strategy below:
1) greet the doctor and engage in some small talk
2) explain the medical problems that the new medicine can help with
3) give instructions on how and when to take it
4) compare the medicine to other available medicines
e.g.
A) Hello Dr. Smith. It's Simon from Uber Research. We spoke on the phone earlier.
B) Oh, hello.
How are you?
A) Great. Would you like to begin the meeting?
B) Sure. What did you say you wanted to show me?
A) It's a great new drug called Ubercillin.
B) What does it do?
A) It can any form of pain.
B) For example?
A) If you experience headaches, migraines, stomachaches, back pain, tooth pain, or muscle pain then Ubercillin is right for you.
B) How does it compare to other similar medicines?
A) It's cheaper than Bufferin, Aspirin, and Panadol, plus it acts faster and lasts longer.
B) Interesting. How long does it last?
A) It lasts for 24 hours. That's 10 times longer than other pain killers.
B) How do you take it?
A) You take it orally with food.
B) Are there any side effects?
A) No. None.
B) What about cost?
A) $5 for a case of 24 tablets.
B) Well, I am very interested in this. I'll place and order today.

Yeah, I heard about it the other day. I’m quite excited. It seems really
interesting. This drug could help a lot of people, especially those people who are allergic to painkillers. I’m looking forward to learning more about it. I’m interested in learning how it compares to aspirin and ibuprofen. I also want to know what patients we should give it to, and how much it will cost. The sales rep is coming tomorrow. So, I’ll be sure to ask her lots of questions. I hope she will give us some free samples.

Type: Reading - Vocabulary search
Purpose: To introduce vocabulary / check comprehension
Method: After the student has read the reading activity and completed the questions, have them find the following words in the reading by listening for their definitions. The teacher reads the definition and the student needs to find the correct word. After the student has found all the words, ask the student to give you a summary of the reading. Hopefully, the student will use some of the new words in their summary.

2) research (n) careful study that is done to find and report new knowledge about something
3) to announce (v) to make (something) known in a public or formal way

3) What is the medicine designed to do?
It's designed to cure any form of pain.

Listening

2) Who does the doctor think Ubercillin will help?
people who are allergic to painkillers.
3) What does the doctor want to know about Ubercillin?
I also want to know what patients we should give it to, and how much it will cost.
