EA: Book 5 Midway Progress Lesson

Chapter 7: Hotels - Speech

“The best hotel I’ve stayed at was in Kyoto. I stayed there last year. I really liked the layout and the architecture. It was very open, and the design was very nice. Every evening you could get one free “welcome drink”, and sit around a fireplace. They also had a very nice bath, although you had to cross a small side road to get there. The service was good. When I asked for an extra blanket they brought me one right away.”

Chapter 8: The world of English - Opinion Exchange

S: Learning a language is very difficult for me. There are so many things to think about all the time. I like it, though. You can learn about a different culture. Do you think learning languages is difficult?
T: It does require a lot of practice. The difficult part for me isn’t the grammar, it’s the cultural aspects.
S: What do you mean?
T: For example, the different ways of saying things, as well as things that exist in one language and don’t in another. Like, “otsukaresama” in Japanese has no equivalent in English.
S: That’s right. But I enjoy learning about the differences.
T: How do you study?
S: I take lessons every week, and I study my notes on the train every day. I also listen to English news on the internet. How about you?
T: I use a flashcard app to learn new kanji, and I take lessons through Skype. I also try to read in Japanese.
S: Oh? What Japanese books do you read?
T: I’ve started reading One Piece. There are lots of volumes though, so there’s a long way to go!

Chapter 9: Traveling - Interview

Possible questions:
Have you ever been to a country other than Japan?
Where did you go?
How did you travel there?
How long did it take?
Is there a direct flight?
What did you do there?
What was your favourite thing about the trip?
How did you get around?
How did you find your way?
Did you like the trip?
Was there anything you didn’t like?
(The student should also ask some follow up questions)

T: Rosetta Stone Learning Center, Rose speaking.
S: Hello, this is Takashi Kato from Super Monitors Inc. I’m calling to schedule a meeting. I would like to show you our new product, the new Super 24” Monitor.
T: I see. Well, I’m free tomorrow morning.
S: That would be great. How about 11 o’clock?
T: 11 o’clock works for me.
S: Great. I will come by your office at 11 o’clock.
T: Alright, see you then.

….

S: So, you can see that our monitors are very sharp, and come with a special feature to reduce eye strain.
T: Does that feature require any special software?
S: No, it’s built in. The monitors also support a 4K resolution.
T: That sounds great. What connections do they have?
S: They have all the standard connections. DVI, HDMI, VGA.
T: I see.
S: Do you have any other questions?
T: No, I don’t.
S: Thank you very much for letting me show you our product.
