By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to talk about where they would like to live.
Communication strategies:
The student should be able to talk about where they would like to live by following the 2 steps below:
1) state where they want to live
2) state why they want to live there
e.g. For my homestay, I would love to stay in the US for a month. I have always wanted to go there since I was a little kid. There are two reasons I would love to go to America: 1. If I lived in America for a month, I would be able to improve my English. This will help me get a better job back home. 2. I love watching American movies. It’s my dream to one day be in a Hollywood movie. If I could go to America I would be one step closer to my dream.
Words and rules:
- The student should be able to use the second conditional e.g. If I won the lotto, I would buy a new house.
- The student should be able to state their hopes, wants, and dreams. e.g. It's my dream to one day live in the UK.
Appropriateness:
Non-verbal behaviour: NA
Register: When doing a speech, it's common to use a more formal register.
Social rules: At the start of a speech, it's common to introduce yourself.
Cultural references: NA
Track #17
I really want to move to Chicago next year. Chicago is bigger than
my city. It’s also more exciting. I’d really like to go fishing on Lake
Michigan. And there is a famous steakhouse there that I’m really
looking forward to going to.
Track #18
I would love to be able to go to university in London and study British
History. London is a very old city. It has more beautiful buildings than
my city. I want to eat real fish & chips, and drink some delicious local
beer.
Because the lesson touches on the topic of moving to a different country, you are welcome to introduce some of the following vocabulary if you like.
1) crime (n)
2) cost of living (n)
3) health care (n)
4) go on a working holiday (v)
5) live overseas (v)
6) go abroad (v)
7) get a job (v)
8) challenge oneself (v)
9) make new friends (v)
10) have an adventure (v)
Option 1:
Difficulty ★★
Type:
Let’s start - Grammar practice
Purpose:
Teaching the student how to use the 2nd conditional correctly.
Method:
Show the student that when we talk about actions in the future that are either impossible or very unlikely we use the 2nd conditional. You can practice this grammar by asking different hypothetical questions
e.g
If you won the lottery, what would you buy?
Would you move overseas for a job?
Naruhodo point
"want" and "hope" have a similar meaning. The difference is that when we say "hope" we talk about actions we can't control.
e.g. I hope it is sunny tomorrow (because I can't control the weather)
Extra questions you might like to ask in the lesson
- Where would you like to live?
- If you could live anywhere, where would you live?
- Would you prefer to live in America or Canada?
- Where is somewhere that you have always dreamed of living?
Let’s start

Top middle: a mansion
Top right: a high-rise apartment
Bottom left: a penthouse
Bottom middle: a middle-class suburb
