By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to catch up with someone they haven't seen in a while.
NOTE: The role-play in this lesson takes place over SNS. However, SNS chat and spoken conversation are basically the same, so there shouldn't be a big difference in how the role-play is conducted. Also, SNS chat applications feature voice and video calling.
Communication strategies:
The student should be able to able to catch up with someone they haven't seen in a while by following the 4 steps below:
1) greet your partner
2) explain how you know each other
3) discuss changes in your life
4) extend an invitation
e.g.
A)
Hi Paul. Long time no see. It's Takashi. You used to teach me at Rosetta Stone. How are you these days?
B) Oh, Hi Takashi. Yeah. Long time no see. I've keeping busy. How about you?
A) Yeah. Everything is great. I'm working at a new company now. I can use English every day.
B) That's great.
A) Are you still teaching English?
B) Yeah, but now I work in our new school in Shibuya.
A) Cool.
B) How are you? Are you still studying English?
A) Of course! I try to study every day. Oh, are you excited about the Olympics?
B) Yes. I have tickets for the fencing.
A) Cool. I would like to see that. But I couldn't get tickets.
B) I have an extra ticket. Would you like to come with me?
A) Really? Sure. I'd love to.
Words and rules:
- The student should be able to name some social networking sites. e.g, Facebook
- The student should be able to extend invitations e.g. Are you up for going to the movies?
- The student should be able to state some actions their perform on social networking sites. e.g. post / upload / comment / like etc.
- The student should be able to use the present perfect tense e.g. How long has it been?

I use Facebook because I live abroad. I can keep in touch with my
friends at home. I use it to share photos with people all over the

Purpose:
Teaching the student how to explain how to use SNS
Method: Tell the student you haven't used Facebook before. Ask the student to teach you how to use it. This should give you a good opportunity to introduce some new verbs.
You can use the Rosetta Stone Facebook site in Japanese for this. Because the site is in Japanese, the student will have to translate into English to explain how to use it.
